Research Faculty make up between 15% and 20% of all bargaining unit members for NTFC local #6546. These Research (Assistant/Associate) Professors are particularly numerous in the sciences and engineering.
Research faculty are engaged in long-term research projects and are hired as part of these projects funded by outside grants. Some research faculty raise their own grant money to fund their salaries. They also supervise and advise post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students as part of their research obligations.
Research faculty have the terminal degree in their field, usually a Ph.D. Research faculty usually work on twelve month, year-to-year contracts. But their contract length might be longer or shorter, depending on their source of funding. Since NTFC won multiyear contracts for our bargaining unit members, many research faculty now have multiyear contracts.
