In addition to the $500 in professional development money guaranteed to members by the university through our contract, 10 grants of up to $500 are now available to members in good standing through a fund gifted to NTFC. This is a one-time funding cycle. When these ten grants are allotted, the fund will be closed.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Applications are now being accepted on a rolling basis for the 2019-2020 academic year. Applications will be reviewed by our Stewards Council once a month. After a decision has been made, successful applicants will be notified promptly. They will receive their funds via direct deposit or check within two weeks of notification of their award.
WHAT CAN I USE THESE FUNDS FOR?
The professional development grant is to be used for expenses including but not limited to: presenting at a conference, attending a conference, research and/or teaching-related materials, and traveling for the purpose of research.
These grants are made possible by generous donations from Dorothee Schneider, a former member of NTFC who retired from her position at the history department in 2019. As a union member, Dorothee was a model organizer and leader. Now, as a NTFC alum, she has decided to give back to her union even more. Thank you Dorothee!

Congratulations to our Professional Development Grant Recipients!
Dr. Ian Hensley
Dr. Hensley is a Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy who received his PhD from Cornell University in 2016. His research focuses primarily on Greek and Roman metaphysics. He will use the grant to present at the Central Meeting of the American Philosophical Association in Chicago in February.
Dr. Eman Saadah
Dr. Saadah is a Teaching Associate Professor, Director of the Less Commonly Taught Languages Program, Director and Language Coordinator of Arabic, and Advisor for the Minor in Arabic Studies. Her research focuses on Egyptian and Palestinian heritage speakers of Arabic. She will use the grant to attend the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Annual Convention and Expo taking place in San Antonio, Texas in November.
Amanda Bales
Amanda Bales joined the University of Illinois as a Lecturer in 2016. Amanda will use the grant to present at the 4th Annual Creative Writing Studies Conference in San Antonio, Texas in March. Her presentation will be a call for fiction instructors to embrace, and even encourage, their students to use the second person point of view in their stories, noting its unique ability to negotiate the rhetorical space between reader and story.
