Weekly Update – March 3, 2017

:: By Shawn Gilmore, NTFC President :: March 3, 2017  ::

Colleagues:
With the weather up and down and the weeks getting a little long, NTFC is going strong.
After last week’s General Membership Meeting, we’ve been working more on our internal structures and outreach, especially as we’re now in a key phase of implementing the collective bargaining agreement that we signed last Spring. In the next months, our members are contractually eligible for the announced campus salary program, should received new and earlier forms of notice about their appointment status for the Fall, and many of our long-term NTT faculty should be getting a new kind of offer, a 1+1 contract type that should stabilize their employment. In addition, the salary floor for NTTs will rise in the Fall. We’re keeping an eye on these changes, and are in contact with members across campus about the various ways these parts are playing out.
This week, I met with UIUC’s new Interim Provost (John Wilkin) to introduce him to NTFC and make sure he was aware of the many moving parts that affect the employment of NTTs here. He let me know that the outgoing Provost left him with a good working knowledge about our last contract bargaining process, and that he was happy to stay engaged between contract cycles. As we work to develop these relationships with various administrators, I hope to allay some of their worries about engaging with unions, while reminding them that we will always work on behalf of our members’ interests.
Hope everyone is staying warm. Our regulars will be out for our weekly Happy Hour today, at or around 5pm, at our normal location, Quality Bar, in downtown Champaign. Come on out if you’re local to celebrate the end of the week!
In solidarity,
Shawn

General Membership Meeting Agenda (on Feb 23)

February 9, 2017

Dear Colleagues:

I’m sending this email to announce the upcoming General Membership meeting of the Non-Tenure Faculty Coalition (NTFC Local #6546), to be held at 5:30 on February 23rd, 2017 in room 29 of the McKinley Foundation, located at the corner of 5th and Daniel St. in Champaign.

We will update the members on the state of our union and discuss our ongoing efforts to implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Other proposed agenda items include:

  • Reporting on our budget, dues collection, and reimbursements for those who responded to our invoices;
  • Voting on a proposed constitutional amendment to clarify/revise language within the constitution itself (see proposed revisions);
  • Announcing dates and outlining nomination procedures for upcoming Officer elections; and
  • Discussing opportunities to serve on standing and new committees, including the Stewards Council, which has just formed, and the Organizing Committee, which has several projects ongoing.

Finally, we will discuss how and when the union should take official stances on political/social issues and/or endorse political candidates.

The General Membership meeting is open to members of Local #6546 only, but we will have membership cards available at the door for any bargaining unit members who wish to join the union at this point.

I hope to see you all there!

Dennis Dullea

[NTFC Presents] Letters from the Front: Tom McKinney and Sentry Hill • Philip Johnston (Dept. of Dance)

Friday, Sept. 30, 3 pm, McKinley Foundation, Room 29.
(5th and Daniel St. Champaign)

Bring your colleagues and friends to Phillip Johnston’s presentation on the research for the play “Tom”. You will enjoy learning about everything that goes into researching, writing and performing a play as a professional.

The play is based on the correspondence, photographs and diaries of Tom McKinney, a member of the Irish fusiliers in World War I. This past summer, it saw a highly successful staging in Belfast, and plans are underway to bring it to the Krannert Center soon.
